In February of 2008 a very large and unusual looking goose came to live on our deck. Not having seen one like
this on the Kawkawlin River before we were not sure what to make of her or him, still not sure! I named her Gertie
because shortly after she arrived an article appeared in the Bay City Times about some guy out on 7 Mile, I believe,
had lost his goose. He described her to a tee in the paper and his name for her was Gertie. I called him and told him
I think your goose is here, he asked if she was OK and being taken care of, I said yes and he then lead me to
believe it was not his goose, she possibly could not have flown that far, she simply did not fly! Well, over the last 2
years she has taken over the river, the neighborhood, and has become a care taker of ducks! She can fly and
make a big racket at the same time, and I'm still sure it was the same goose from 7 Mile, but the guy just did not
want her back. She spends her winters, we think, out at the Consumers' hot pond, or someone is taking her in and
caring for her until spring, she eats her weight in corn at the Cunninghams, and she does think she is a Ga-Duck,
she prefers ducks to geese, and she has certainly become part of our river. At any rate, I'm sure you have seen her
floating down the river, she seems very happy to live here, and I think she is here to stay. Pat Rau
